The idea

The Artistic Commission begins with an idea.

You do not need to arrive with a finished concept. I develop an original photographic proposition around you. It can emerge from a person, a memory, a place, an object, a relationship, a gesture, a question — or another element connected to you. The proposition is developed specifically for the person.

The process

  1. 01

    The proposition

You begin by telling me a little about yourself. What interests you? What places matter to you? Is there an object, memory, relationship, or idea that stays with you? You do not need to arrive with a finished concept. The artistic proposition is mine to develop.

  2. 02

    The concept

I develop an original photographic concept specifically for you. It may involve a place, an object, clothing, movement, performance, staging, a situation or a visual idea. The concept is presented to you before the work begins.

  3. 03

    Acceptance

The commission is collaborative, but it is not client-directed photography. I propose the artistic direction. You decide whether you want to enter into it. The commission only proceeds once the proposition has been accepted.

  4. 04

    The work

Once the concept is accepted, we produce the photographic work together — in the studio, in your home, in your neighbourhood, or somewhere else in Stockholm. The final image becomes part of The Portrait Archive.

The concept is developed by the artist and must be accepted before the commission is confirmed.

This is not a portrait session.

It is a commissioned artwork. The purpose is not simply to make you look good in a photograph. It is to create an image that could not have existed without you, this particular moment, and this particular idea.

The archive

Every Artistic Commission enters The Portrait Archive as part of its larger record of people and the present. The work is therefore both a personal artwork and a document of a person living in Stockholm at this particular moment in time.

What the commission covers

The 30,000 SEK commission covers the development of the artistic idea and the photographic production — the creation of the concept and the photograph itself.

Some commissions require nothing more. Depending on the proposed concept, others may require additional production costs. These may include, for example:

  • Location rental
  • Travel outside Stockholm
  • Special clothing or costumes
  • Props and objects
  • Set construction
  • Professional hair and makeup
  • Assistants or additional crew
  • Special equipment
  • Materials
  • Other production requirements specific to the project

Any additional costs will depend entirely on the proposed artistic concept and will be discussed and agreed upon with the participant before the commission is confirmed.

The 30,000 SEK therefore covers the artistic commission itself; additional production expenses are quoted separately when required by the project.
